The use of music in our everyday society is an important and integral part of our live. It is considered to be the one universal language being able to cross over racial, religious and language barriers. Music also relates to us on every level of our being from the rhythm which appeals to our body, the melody that appeals to our mind and intellect and the harmony which appeals to our emotions, spirit and soul. When all of this is taken into consideration it becomes evident that when preparing your wedding ceremony and reception time and effort should be put into choosing music that is memorable and significant and will contribute to the overall success of the celebration.
The number songs used throughout the wedding day can vary depending on the tastes and needs of the couple getting married. In a wedding ceremony it is common for music to be used for the processional hymn, lighting of the candle, signing of the registry, communion (if applicable) and the recessional hymn. Each song chosen needs to compliment the meaning and significance of that part of the wedding ceremony. It is important to remember that if you are getting married inside a church building that sometimes there are restrictions on the style and types of songs that can be used, it is always worth communicating with the celebrant early in the planning process what songs you would like to use, this can prevent disappointment and heart ache closer to the wedding day.
The wedding reception has a lot more flexibility in the styles and choices of songs that can be used. People use music in many different parts of the reception to evoke specific reactions in the guests. Common place for music to be used at a reception include the entrance of the bridal party (either individual songs for each person or one for the entire party), background music during cocktails and dinner, introduction music for speeches, the cutting of the cake, bridal dance and the bride and groom, farewell. Music at receptions are usually provided by professionals in the form of either a disc-jockey (DJ) or band. Both entertainment options have their advantages and disadvantages which must be considered in the reception planning.
Music can be an important part of many different aspects of your wedding day, the selection of the right songs can add meaning and significance and can communicate the love the couple share. This makes it important for the couple to take the time to plan and prepare a shortlist of the exact songs that they would like to be a part of their ceremony and where and how they would like them to be used. If there is uncertainty in where a certain song might be able to be effectively used then it is important that the couple ask the advice of professional musicians and wedding planners, their years of experience can be a valuable asset in helping you in your selections, organisation and preparation.
