The Burning Volkswagen Kombi - A Fiery Problem For A Classic Van


The air-cooled Volkswagen Kombi is an iconic vehicle that just oozes character. Kombis are practical too. You can drive them to work, carry the family around and go camping in them, and you still see them being used on a daily basis as well as being restored for occasional use. There are still plenty of young guys and girls who would like to own one as their daily driver.

Volkswagen kombis do have one disturbing fault though. They catch fire, and then it's goodbye Kombi.

So just why do they catch fire, and what can you do to stop yours burning?

I haven't found a definitive article in a VW magazine yet, but I've been driving my 1976 2 liter bay window as my daily driver for over 14 years, so I've taken an interest in the problem and learnt as much as I could. I'll answer the question as well as I can.

There are actually a few different things that can cause the Kombi to burn, but they all come back to fuel getting loose in the engine bay. Kombis have a fuel tank in front of and above the engine, a hose going down from that to the fuel pump, and another hose going up through the tinware to the carbies.

Kombis are old now, and they have a lot of age related problems unless they've been rebuilt. Even then, it's most likely not everything has been brought back to as new condition.

One of those old-age problems is perished and cracked fuel lines. Chances are yours have been replaced, but check them anyway. When they crack they can leak gas everywhere. One spark and your Kombi is history. Also, right below the engine are two hot heat exchangers that have the exhaust running through them. I don't know what causes the biggest problem, heat exchangers or sparks, but it's largely irrelevant when your van goes up in smoke.

So check those fuel lines, and if you buy a kombi don't drive it anywhere with old and cracked fuel lines. Replace them! And don't forget to check the hose from the fuel tank to the pump. It's out of the way and easily overlooked.

If you've undone the fuel hoses a few times, make sure you haven't cut through the hose with the edge of the hose clamp. It can happen, and then you have gas dripping down onto the engine.

The fuel hose runs through the tinware surrounding the engine. The tinware plays a very important role, it's essential for keeping your engine cool. It's nearly as important as the radiator on water cooled cars, so don't discard it. But do check where the fuel line runs through the tinware. There should be a rubber grommet protecting the fuel line from the tin. Mine eventually perished, and it was one of the few parts I couldn't buy new, so I wrapped the fuel line in a larger diameter piece of hose to stop the rubbing,

Another old-age problem is where the fuel lines go into the carbies. There is a brass inlet pipe that is part of the carburetor, and they come loose. You can imagine what happens. All of a sudden the gas that was going into the carby is spraying all over the engine. Goodbye Kombi!

I was very lucky. I was buying parts from a long-time VW mechanic, and he told me about that particular problem. I checked the inlet pipes not long after, and one of them actually pulled right out of the carby very easily. I put it back in with loctite and check both inlet pipes regularly. If yours are loose, check with your mechanic and get them fixed before you drive your van again.

My Kombi also had loose inlet and outlet pipes in the fuel pump. They got put back in with loctite, and they also get checked whenever I'm doing maintenance on the engine.

I've come across another problem too. There is a rubber elbow near the fuel filler. Mine perished, and I could smell gas, but couldn't find the leak. Eventually I found fuel dripping of the bottom of the Kombi below the filler. Needles to say that got replaced before I drove it again.

I'm not saying that I've listed everything that can make a Kombi burn, so if a vee-dubber tells you other causes, listen to them. And keep a good eye on your kombis fuel lines. If you smell gas find out where it is coming from and fix it. It must be very depressing sitting on the side of the road watching your beloved Kombi going up in smoke.

And it does happen. You'll read about burning Kombis in VW magazines and on forums, and I've heard of a couple of incidents personally. My wife was driving to work one day and up ahead was a column of smoke and the local fire crew. As she drove past she saw a kombi burning. The burnt out shell ended up in a holding yard near where I lived for a few weeks.

A couple of months later the attendant where I got gas told me about his Kombi. His wife was driving it, smelt gas and went into a gas station to get it checked. The mechanic couldn't see any leaks so she kept driving. The Kombi burst into flames and that was the end of it.

Making your own and home printing wedding invitations is a great way to save money on your wedding stationery. You've carefully thought about your design and now you're ready to print, but before you do, make sure you read these essential tips for home printing your invites.

- Practice - always do a trial run on your chosen paper. Think about whether the paper looks good? Does the design look OK on your chosen paper colour and size? Do you have good balance in your layout? Is it as you expected? If the answer is 'no' to any of these, it's back to the drawing board!

- Print out any practice cards on the 'draft' or 'fast' setting - it'll save your ink. Then when you're happy, run the invites out at the highest quality.

- For illustrations, pictures or photos - print on the highest quality for the best result.

- Some papers, such as vellum don't absorb the ink so it just sits on top of the paper until it is dry. This means that it's susceptible to smudging. In this case, print out individual sheets and remove them from your printer tray. Dry the print outs flat as individual sheets - not on top of one another.

- Also, print out vellum on 'fast' or 'draft' quality - they'll dry much quicker.

- Don't use watercolours or soluble pencils to add colour to your invitations. Inkjet ink is water soluble, so it will run and smudge with contact with water.

- Use a copy shop if you have any large amounts of cutting or copying to do. A copy shop will also copy onto special papers. This is especially useful for inserts - so use a template, print out one and then let the copy shop copy and cut it to size.

Future couples are always thinking of ways to make the best wedding cards to send to their loved ones and significant others. However, a lot of people just choose the simple or artistic do-it-yourself wedding cards, or just buy ready-made templates online. But the best ones I want to share are those that are funny, one-of-a-kind, or those having weird designs.

The first one is a shared sample card from Funtoosh.com. Instead of choosing those standard formalities in the card's wording, it is formatted like a matching type exam except that; it has no blanks in it. The introduction is hilariously realistic that buries the old-fashioned happily-ever-after fantasy in marriage.

The second one is a wedding card that looks like a notebook PC with "Wedding BELL" as the logo, "BELL" has a similar logo design as Dell's. Inside looks like a desktop with different icons and a chatbox that states the history of how the couple met. If you are the kind of couple who met through chat or through the internet, this might be a great idea to start as your wedding theme.

The third best wedding card for me is a Halloween wedding invitation with a great combination of orange and black in the form of an owl. Though this is not good for couples who are superstitious, this can be very unique if the occasion is done on November. An additional surprise would be... during the ceremony, the flower girls can put candies in a plastic pumpkin container and throw them for the guests instead of flower petals in a woven basket.

Next is the laser-cut card. Though there have been a lot of laser-cut designs for decorations and cardboard framing, it is now a fad for such invitations. There are many intricate designs to choose from and you can even submit a design of your own. They are very stylish yet they retain the elegant parlance in writing.

The last one is the do-it-yourself wheel card. Some websites now offer editing and templates if you choose to make one. It's just made of two cardboards or chipboards cut in a slightly different-sized circle with a plug or grommet in the center to make the wheel turn, once the peep box is in line with the title, it shows the details on that particular heading.

In the iPhoto window, at the bottom right, there's a button for emailing your photos. If you use this button, it will attach your selected photos to an Apple Mail email.

But what if you don't use Apple Mail for your email? What if you use Entourage, or another email program? Here's how to change the default email program.


  1. Under the iPhoto menu at the top, choose Preferences.

  2. At the top, select General (which is probably selected already, but just make sure.)

  3. Under "Email photos using" click to get a dropdown list. Here you can select which email program you're using.

You only need to do this once. From now on, when you click the email button in the main iPhoto window, the photos you've selected will be attached to an email in the program of your choice.

2. Making books as gifts

When I go visiting friends and relatives, I find an ideal housewarming present is something I send afterwards-a custom-made book of photos from my visit. It's also great as a memento of a special event, like a birthday party or a reunion of old friends or classmates.

For my mother's birthday, my brother and I made a book of photos of us, including some baby photos, some long-ago family trips, recent vacations with spouses, and photos from his wedding. We took all those photos and made a classy hardcover. But for other friends, I've made the tiny wallet-size booklets (you get 3 for $12, so you can give one to each person who was present at the event).

The great thing about iPhoto and bookmaking is that they have templates to choose from, so you don't have to be a designer yourself, but within that template there is a lot of freedom to create different page layouts. And it's easy.

Tip: If you want to use a special font in your iPhoto book, you can create the text in Word, using the special font, and then cut and paste the text into iPhoto. Voila, your original font style will be preserved.

Tip: I have found that my photos look somewhat dark when printed in book form, so I always alter the color on my photos by doing Awesome Thing #3:

3. Quick color correction

I'm no expert with Photoshop, and I certainly don't know how to adjust all that RGB stuff, but I've found a few tricks that make my photos look better without taking too much time.

Color correction can be done through the editing area. To get to the editing area, select a photo and then click the "Edit" button at the bottom left (the pencil icon). You'll see the options at the bottom: I never ever use "Enhance" as I think it doesn't work that well. Instead click on "Adjust." The adjust palette pops up.

Don't overdo it with the sliders unless you're going for a photo that looks dreamlike or just plain weird. Instead here's what I do:


  1. Move the exposure slider just a bit to the right, to see if it brightens things up nicely without washing everything out.

  2. Then use the sliders under the colored Levels graph at the top-move the left-hand slider to the right until it's just underneath the place where the colored graph line starts to rise from 0. Move the right-hand slider to the left until it's just underneath the place where the colored graph line dips down to 0.

  3. Click Done.

This way, the blacks should be very black and the whites should be very white, and you've got the range of colors between.

Tip: I find photos that look good when printed often look too bright when onscreen. So often I will make a duplicate of the photo before I color-correct it. Then I have one copy with original color, and one copy with brighter color for putting into a book.

4. Smart Albums

If I want to pull up all the pictures with my brother in them, for example, I can use the Smart Album feature. Smart Album automatically pulls all photos that have whatever characteristic you specify, whether that's a keyword tag, a date, a title, your rating--even the camera you took the photos with.

To create a Smart Album, click on the "+" button at the bottom left of the screen, and then click "Smart Album" from the icons at the top of the window.

Of course this requires that when you import the photos, you tag them with names and keywords of anything you might want to make a Smart Album with later.

Tip: Two new features of iPhoto '09 eliminate the need to add certain tags to your photos:


  1. Faces uses face recognition software to automatically find all the pictures of, say, my brother in my entire photo library.

  2. The Geotagging feature means that if you take pictures with an iPhone or a GPS-enabled camera, each photo automatically gets tagged with the location where it was taken. (If you're taking photos with a regular camera, you need to manually tag your own photos by location.)


5. Inspiration and reference albums

You can use iPhoto for way more than just storing and organizing your own photos. You can also use it as a way to store and sort images of any kind that you want to use on a project, or for inspiration, or for reference.

For example I do knitting, sewing, and crochet--and while surfing the net I come across images of scarves, handbags, sweaters, shawls, and tons of other handmade items that are inspirational, or give me ideas for future projects. So I've created a few albums in iPhoto specifically for craft inspiration.

When you see a photo online that you want to keep for reference, here's what you do:


  1. Right-click (or hold down the Option key and click, same thing) on the image.

  2. From the pop-up menu that comes up, choose "Add image to iPhoto Library."

  3. Open up iPhoto and from the items on the left-hand side, choose "Last import." The photo you just found on the web should be here. Click and drag that image into any photo album.

You could use this system for storing photos of interiors (if you're thinking of redoing your living room), or images of business card designs (if you're looking for inspirational material for your own business cards), as just two examples. This system works great in tandem with Google Images--search for photos on Google Images and then save and store them in iPhoto for reference.
