Wedding Planning Checklist - 6 to 12 Months Before Your Wedding


Your wedding day will be here in 6 to 12 months! Now is the time to take care of the big items, such as determining your exact wedding date, securing the wedding reception location, shopping for your wedding dress and selecting your wedding invitations. Following is a suggested timetable for planning your wedding.


  • Select a wedding date and time. This may need to be done in conjunction with selecting and reserving the ceremony and reception sites.

  • Decide how the wedding will be financed. If parents are helping to pay for it, find out how they want to deal with this. It may be helpful to do some research about wedding costs in your area before attempting to come up with a budget.

  • Consider hiring a wedding coordinator.

  • Make arrangements with the officiator.

  • Select your wedding dress, veil, shoes and accessories. Allow time for alterations and fittings.

  • Choose the bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers, and honored roles.

  • Decide on a florist, photographer, videographer, caterer and D.J. or entertainment and meet with them to discuss budgets and options.

  • Discuss the guest list with fiancé and families.

  • Contact a rental coordinator for equipment reservations.

  • Discuss the honeymoon and reservations. Apply for passports, if needed. Make airline and hotel reservations for the honeymoon.

  • Arrange for time off work, if necessary.

  • Envision the theme and tone of your wedding - formal or casual, day or evening, religious or secular, etc.

  • Make arrangements for music at your ceremony and reception.

  • Select and order bridesmaids' dresses, or arrange for a seamstress to make them.

  • Start working on guest lists. Typically, there are four - the bride's family's list, the groom's family's list, the bride's list and the groom's list. Then finalize the wedding guest list.

  • Shop for and order wedding invitations, calligraphy, announcements and thank you notes.

  • Shop for and order wedding favors.

  • Draw a time line for the wedding reception. Share and discuss the reception timeline all parties involved.

  • Select and order your wedding cake.

  • Contact your photographer to set up a time for the bridal portrait.

  • Look into wedding insurance and decide if it's a good option for you.

  • Order your wedding rings.


Use this checklist as a guideline for planning your wedding. Obviously, the timing depends on your personal priorities and what you feel needs to be accomplished.

Appraising And Insuring Your Jewelry


I've seen it time and time again. Customers come to have estimates or appraisals done for their lost, stolen, or damaged jewelry. They ask if the appraisal can be done without seeing the jewelry or if it can be done based on their recollection of what it used to look like. Unfortunately insurance companies will not accept this form of evaluation or appraisal, and certainly not after the fact. In the following article I will explain what to do in order to properly appraise and insure your jewelry.

Creditable Appraisals
Insurance companies require that your jewelry policy be based on official and creditable appraisals done by a reputable jeweler. Jewelers that have studied or have been train by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will provide the most acceptable appraisals.

Being trained by GIA ensures a conservative grading analysis and a correct evaluation of the jewelry's worth. Most insurance companies do not require that you have your jewelry appraised by GIA graduates however; it's always better to have one done by someone with these credentials.

Your appraisal should include the information regarding the precious metal content including it's weight, karat purity, and color. The diamonds and gemstones should be described in terms of shape, carat weight, color, clarity, and cut grade.

If the diamonds are pre-certified by a grading laboratory then you should give a copy of the certification to the appraiser and ask them to list this information on the appraisal. If possible have the appraiser photograph the items and attach this photograph to the appraisal when submitting to the insurance company. Always keep a copy in a safe deposit box or in a fire proof safe. You can learn more about insuring your jewelry at certified diamonds.

Jewelry appraisals should be reassessed every 7-10 years to determine if the value of the items has appreciated. Jewelry is a commodity and like all commodities they are subject to fluctuations in value. In recent years the value of certain diamonds have actually doubled in price because of shortages in the marketplace for high demand shapes and sizes. A loss after such a gain in value without proper reassessments will result in gaps in your jewelry coverage when trying to replace the item.

Choosing the Proper Insurance Coverage
The biggest mistake consumers' make is assuming that their homeowners insurance will cover them in the event of a loss. This could be further from the truth. The typical home insurance only allows $1500 - $5000 for personal articles and with that is a deductible of $500 - $1500. Along with that is the fact that some homeowners' insurance policies do not allow for loss of the item, damage, or diamond loss from the setting. The best way to insure your jewelry is to get a personal articles policy written by your agent. This policy should include loss of the item, theft of item, damage, and loss of gemstones & diamonds. Ask your insurance agent to quote the policy with no deductible and with the above coverage. The going rate for jewelry insurance is $1.50 - $1.85 per hundred and if you're quote higher then your probably paying too much. To calculate the annual premium take the appraised value of the jewelry and multiply is by the rate and then divide it by 100. Example (appraised value $10,000 X $1.50 = $15,000 Divide by 100 = $150 per year).

Some local insurance agents aren't familiar with jewelry insurance policies and you may feel like you're not getting the proper assistance. There are a couple of jewelry insurance companies that provide superior service and if your agent fails to give you proper assistance I recommend you give them a call. The two I like most are CHUBB Insurance and Jewelers Mutual. These companies specialize in personal articles policies and generally have the lowest rates with the best coverage.

Insurance is one of those things that you have to think about until you really need it. I will say though that a jewelry insurance policy makes a lot of sense. Let say you have a wedding set worth $5000 that you wear every day. How often do walk around with $5000 cash in your pocket? Almost never right? Well is some cases you walk around with the jewelry equivalent all the time. If you have valuable jewelry that you wear everyday then you are certainly increasing your chances of having an unfortunate loss. Jewelry valued at $5000 can cost as little as $75 per year to insure. It's worth every penny to give you the peace of mind to wear it with pride and without worry.

Attention Mothers: Updated Wedding Etiquette You Should Know!


It is true that traditional etiquette and customs are the foundation of wedding planning. Yet at the same time, etiquette does evolve over time, and certain things which may have been properly done one way in the past might now be approached in a new, yet equally appropriate, fashion. For mothers and daughters planning a wedding together, a difference in opinion about what is proper or improper can turn into a huge point of conflict. Sort it all out and restore the peace by getting caught up on all the updated wedding etiquette that every mother of the bride should know.

Many of the greatest changes of wedding etiquette have come in the area of wedding attire. For instance, in the mother's day, brides did not wear strapless gowns for church weddings, yet these days, most bridal gowns in the shops are strapless. Unless your church or synagogue has specific rules (as Jewish Orthodox synagogues do, for instance), having bare shoulders for a religious ceremony is just fine. Too much cleavage, however, is still a no-no.

No longer are brides expected to wear perfectly matched ensembles anymore. An eclectic approach to expressing personal style is well within the realm of good taste and proper etiquette. So if the bride wants to wear crystal earrings with a pearl necklace, her mom should not fret. Nor should she worry about the old dictate that sparkly diamond or crystal earrings should only be worn after sundown. Also out the window are pantyhose, dyed-to-match shoes for bridesmaids, and mother of the bride outfits in the wedding colors. A big controversy around proper wedding attire still surrounds the issue of wearing black to a wedding. In many families, this is still considered strictly taboo, but if you happen to go to a wedding in New York, you might be hard pressed to find guests wearing a color other than black. A good rule of thumb is that the mothers of the bride and groom should definitely avoid black, no matter where the wedding is being held.

A huge shift in traditional wedding etiquette has to do with who pays for it. For many generations, etiquette dictated that the bride's father paid for everything aside from the bride's bouquet, the wedding rings, rehearsal dinner, and honeymoon. While it is still common for the father of the bride (these days it is more realistically both parents of the bride) to cover a lot of the wedding expenses, things are no longer set in stone. Paying for the wedding should be approached practically, with some combination of the bride and groom, her parents, and his parents splitting costs as income and interest allow. If it is the bride's second time down the aisle, her parents should in no way feel obligated to pay for the event.

Speaking of second weddings, this is another area where there have been a lot of changes in the etiquette department. A generation or two ago, being divorced was considered to be shameful, with the result that second weddings were expected to be held in private with minimal fanfare. These days, second (and third and fourth!) weddings are often just as large as first weddings. It is fine for a second wedding to be lavish and grand if that is what the bride and groom want - and they are willing to pay for it themselves. A few points of traditional etiquette do still apply, however. A bride should not not wear a veil if it is her second time down the aisle, showers are reserved for first time brides, and no one is required to give a wedding gift to the same bride or groom twice (though they may if they wish).

While many of the finer points of etiquette have evolved over the years, traditional mothers of the bride will be pleased to learn that many customs remain unchanged. It is still in poor taste to include bridal registry details in the wedding invitations, all guests who are invited to the ceremony must be invited to the reception, and every wedding gift received deserves a handwritten thank you note. Above all, being a gracious bride and a thoughtful host never goes out of style.

Digital Photography: Quality of Light


Categories of Light

All light can be divided into categories based on the type (source), the intensity, and the direction. One of the most basic divisions is between natural and artificial light. Another is hard versus diffuse (soft) light. A third set of categories distinguishes the direction from which the light is coming, which it also determines where highlights and shadows will appear in the image. Side, frontal, and back light are a few examples of direction. But, before diving into specifics, it's important to understand the relationship of these categories to one another.

Natural Light

Natural light is the best type of light for many photographic situations. In fact, the broader goal for many photographers using artificial light is simply to emulate the qualities of natural light. One positive note on natural light: no batteries needed. It's available anywhere you go and, apart from the subject matter, it's probably the quality of the natural light that drew you to the scene in the first place. In short, the one reason why natural light looks so good in images is that it is natural.

As previously noted, natural light comes from the Sun (or other "suns," in the case of starlight), and each type of natural light has its own qualities:


  • Full, midday sunlight versus early-morning or late-afternoon

  • Open shade

  • Overcast skies

  • Sunrise or sunset

  • The deep blues of twilight

  • Moonlight

  • Starlight

  • Window light

  • Reflected sunlight, both soft and hard

  • Daylight illumination from a frosted skylight

  • Other natural sources not from the sun include firelight and lightning

Natural light can also be great for photos of people, though it may sometimes prove more difficult to use because it requires careful planning and observation. It takes more skill to find the ideal natural light for the idea, emotion, or mood you wish to convey.

Learning to evaluate and take advantage of natural light will dramatically improve your photographs.

Taking Advantage of Natural Light: Time of Day
Please review the following images closely. Pay close attention to the shadows, highlights and feeling of depth created in the photo of the woman at 7:45 a.m. as compared with the picture of her at 7:00 p.m. The light used in the earlier image (7:45 a.m.) helps create more depth in the scene, and it helps provide the perception of more space between foreground, middle ground, and background. In the later image (7:00 p.m.), the light is not helping to create more depth. Spatially, the scene is "flatter" in terms of contrast, and thus has less depth.

Landscape photographers are known to use the warm colors and long shadows of morning light. This can create more drama in the landscape, which may better represent the land itself. If you search for landscape images in magazines and calendars, you will find many examples of dramatic light achieved in early-morning hours. You will not see many landscape images made in midday light, because the increased contrast, lack of visual depth, and (unsaturated) colors are not what the photographer thought would best describe the scene.

Obviously, this is a generalization, but as you pay close attention to the thousands of images you encounter daily, you'll likely notice trends in terms of the type of light used for different situations.

Taking Advantage of Natural Light - Disabling Your Flash
The one thing that can kill the ambience of natural or existing light is the on-camera flash. Though this is not as big of an issue when shooting in manual mode, semi-automatic and fully automatic modes (such as aperture-priority and sports modes, respectively) can trigger the flash.

The best thing to do is to turn off the flash in these modes. The camera is programmed to make a good exposure, and often that includes adding in some of its own light if it feels there isn't enough available light for a good exposure. In some cases, the flash is triggered simply because it has been fooled by the presence of dark tones in the main subject or the background. This goes back, remember, to your understanding of how your in-camera (reflective) meter works.

Nothing can destroy the subtlety and character of natural light more than camera's built-in flash. If you want to take advantage of natural light, learn how to turn off your camera's built-in flash.

Artificial light is any light that is not natural and depends on an external source of power. This could be your on-camera flash, external flash units or studio strobes, tungsten photo floods, an overhead light fixture, fluorescent lights in an office environment, streetlights, stadium lights, stage lighting for a concert, the twinkling glow from Christmas-tree lights, neon, and so forth. Like natural light, artificial light can fall under the larger category of existing or available light (in other words, light you do not bring to or set up for your subject).

You might decide to use artificial light for a variety of reasons, including:


  • When you need maximum control of your scene by using studio light sources, whether they are strobes or continuous hot lights.

  • When there is not enough natural light to make an exposure.

  • When you want to preserve the quality of the artificial light as an element in your image, such as the warm yellow light from a corner lamp, the harsh overhead from fluorescent lights, or the colorful glow of stage or club lights.

Experimenting with different types of artificial lighting will help you understand how they influence the image and how your camera records them. The more you know about the qualities of light, natural and artificial, the better you can visualize and control the effects they bring. Being able to identify different sources of artificial light and their inherent qualities will go a long way in helping you predict how they will affect your photography.

Tungsten Lights

These are also referred to as incandescent lights. They are most often found in homes, and they are among the cheapest bulbs to purchase. However, they are much less energy-efficient, and they give off a good amount of heat. Light from tungsten bulbs can vary quite a bit in terms of brightness (25-watt bulb versus a 500-watt photo flood, for example), but this light is generally softer and warmer than fluorescent light.

Halogen Light

This type of incandescent light is more energy-efficient and produces a brighter, whiter light source. It is used in projectors, household lamps, some streetlights, car headlights, and continuous studio lighting (also referred to as "hot lights").

Neon Light

A true neon light will have an orange-red color and is filled with neon gas, through which a small current is passed, causing it to glow. What we know as neon signs, which may be a number of different colors, rely on other types of gases for their color. Though neon lights don't really provide enough illumination to be a light source for a broader scene, they themselves can make for interesting subjects or background material

Streetlight (Sodium Vapor)

Like neon lights, sodium-vapor lights use pressurized gas to produce light. You can identify sodium-vapor lights by their yellow illumination. If you take a long night exposure using street lamps as your light source, you'll notice this same, somewhat eerie yellow-orange glow pervade your image.

Artificial Light (continued)

In addition to ambient or available artificial light, there are a number of options with which you can have more control: namely, flash or strobes. Many digital cameras come with built-in on-camera flash units that may automatically pop up, ready to fire in low-light situations (depending on your exposure mode and camera make). As alluded to earlier, these are generally the least appealing light sources in terms of effect..

Off-Camera Flash

An off-camera flash is more useful and offers many possibilities for positioning the flash, as well as for using accessories such as a mini flash-softbox or bounce cards to modify the quality of the light. In order to use an off-camera flash, your camera needs to have either a hot shoe or flash sync connection.

Club or Stage Light

Amazing effects can be achieved with these multicolored directional lights. Stage lights in particular are extremely powerful, making it easy to isolate separate beams of illumination. Concerts make liberal use of such effects

Studio Strobes
These are lighting systems that run from a power pack that is plugged into a standard power outlet. They connect to your camera via a sync cord, a slave unit (a device where an on-camera flash triggers the studio strobes), or a wireless connection. Studio strobes offer the most versatility and control in how the scene is lit. Their power output can be varied at the power pack, and they can accept a wide variety of light-modifying accessories.

As far as studio work goes, for the new user, the main disadvantage of a strobe system is that you cannot see the effect that the light will have on the subject. You have to use a flash meter to determine exposure and take test shots to determine how well the lighting setup is working. Fortunately, digital cameras provide instant feedback without the need for costly Polaroid tests.

Lightboxes and Studio StandsThere is a wide variety of stands and softbox types. If you plan to shoot on-location, size and weight might be an issue, and if you plan to keep lights only in the studio, maybe size is not such a big issue. More important, though, is the quality of light provided by the various light-modification tools. There are many different shapes of soft boxes and umbrellas, and they all produce a different quality of light.

Tungsten-Halogen Lamps

Some portrait studios still use hot lights for various reasons. There are advantages and disadvantage to both. In general, these are all terms with which you should be familiar, and this knowledge will help you choose the right lighting for any situation down the road.

Hard and Diffuse Light

We used the terms soft and hard light several times to describe characteristics of individual artificial light sources, and, in the case of natural light, qualities relating to specific times of day. Certainly, all light can be divided into one of these two categories, also referred to as specular and diffuse light.

Diffuse Light(or soft)

light is lower in contrast and more even. As a result, it is often easier to achieve a good exposure for both highlighted and shadowy areas, as the difference between the two is slight. Diffuse light can be very complementary for pictures of people where that person's likeness is the highest priority.

Diffuse light is either filtered through or bounced off another surface before hitting the subject. Open shade is one source of diffuse light. Other examples include: light filtered through a high canopy of leaves, the shady side of a building, or in the shelter of a doorway. Clouds, fog, dust, smoke, and smog are other environmental circumstances that can yield varying degrees of diffuse light, each serving to block or bounce the sun's rays. Window light may also provide very soft light, depending on the direction of the sun or how dirty the glass

Hard Light

Hard light is directional and generally more intense, thereby heightening contrast. It's great for building drama in a scene and emphasizing shape and dimension. Deep, defined shadows are characteristics of harsher light. Generally, hard light is used to illustrate an idea or concept, but it does not create a good likeness of a person.

Directional Light

The direction from which light hits your subject can have dramatic impact on your shot. Side lighting, for example, is quite effective at sculpting a subject, throwing long shadows, bringing out details, and adding a powerful flair. Backlit scenes can also be dramatic, with the light coming directly towards the camera, creating stark outlines of foreground elements or rendering a subject to complete silhouette. Frontal light tends to "flatten" a subject by minimizing the distance relationships between foreground and background and eliminating shadows that would otherwise give a sense of dimension.

The direction of light can also be used to slim a face or make a face look more full. For example, if your subject has a round face, you can use side lighting to give the perception that the subject's face is not as round. For a thin face you wanted to make a little fuller, you could use more frontal light. The best thing to do is try many different combinations to see what you like and in what situations.

Directional Light (continued)

Additional possibilities, though seldom used, as they are less flattering, include lighting a subject from above or below. Yet, even these have their uses. Lighting a subject from above may reference police questioning or interrogation, or even the sun at midday. Lighting from below may conjure the feeling of telling ghost stories around a campfire, with the story's narrator holding a flashlight under his chin for eerie effect.

In addition to the direction of light, you can also play with how this relationship changes when your subject is not facing the camera, but instead facing away, or into the light.

People are easily the number one subject for photographs. From party snaps, to photos of children and travel shots of family members in front of famous monuments, millions upon millions of people photographs are taken every single say of the year.

Portrait photography is a little different to general people photography. The intent of portrait photography is capture and display something of the 'essence' of a person; to say something about their character, personality, or life.

The three most important things to get right in portrait photography are camera settings, lighting, and your relationship with your model.

Camera settings for portrait photography

Because taking portrait photographs is all about a person's face (or if it's a wider shot, their head-and-shoulders), classic portrait photography settings seek to remove anything distracting from the background of the shot. This mimics the effect of looking at someone's face from very close up, and makes the subject 'pop' (this is photographer-speak for 'stand out and capture attention').

The way to achieve a distraction-free portrait photo is to use a wide aperture, often as wide as possible (f/2.8 or f/4 are popular choices). Wide apertures produce a shallow depth-of-field, which renders anything far from the plane of best focus - i.e. the background - as a soft blur.

Aside from a wide aperture, the only other important setting is ISO. This should be as low a number as possible (e.g. ISO 100), as higher ISOs will lead to digital noise, which is particularly ugly in a portrait.
There's one offshoot of portrait photography where the recommended settings are different, and that's environmental portrait photography. Environmental portrait photography seeks to show a person in their 'natural habitat', which is often their workplace. Here you want to show the background, so a smaller aperture is appropriate.

Lighting for portrait photography

Lighting in portrait photography can be as complicated as you like. Professional portrait photography is almost always done in a studio, where the lighting can be 100% controlled. If you're reading this, chances are you don't have your own photography studio, so let's discuss a simple lighting scheme you can set up at home.

First, position your model at a window. The light coming from the window should be bright, but not direct (i.e. not coming directly from the sun). You model should be facing you, side on to the window. Light from the window light will obviously light up the side of their face that is closest to it. Then, position something on the other side of your model that will bounce reflected light from the window onto the other side of their face. Anything white or reflective will do, for example a piece of white cardboard or a sheet of aluminum.

Now you have a basic, flattering light scheme, with the main light source on one side of your model's face, and 'fill' light from the reflector on the other. Don't forget that you should frame the shot close enough that the reflector is not in the shot.

Interacting with your subject

Portrait photography inevitably says something about the relationship between photographer and subject. Unless you're shooting professional models, the hardest thing about taking portrait photos is not in fact camera settings or lighting, but ensuring that your model is comfortable and relaxed enough to give you good results. A model who feels awkward, uncomfortable or self-conscious will not photograph well.

Often the best strategy to relax your model is simply to engage them in conversation, as this will take their mind off the camera. They'll probably get more comfortable with the process after you've rattled off a few shots, so schedule a decent amount of time and plan on taking your best shots towards the end of the session.

Turning a Dream Into a Reality


Sometimes a window of opportunity presents itself and if you blink you could miss it.

We've been talking about our passion for Africa for years. Simply going on holiday there hasn't been enough for either of us and returning to the UK, at the end of any African holiday becoming more and more of a wrench. Yet we did nothing about it, although this was largely due to the fact that one of my children was still at home.

I've had this dream since the first time I set foot in the Masaai Mara nearly 15 years ago and fortunately it has also become Sean's dream after his first visit to S Africa in 2005 for our wedding. Luckily he fell in love with Africa too.

I've noticed that people often put off their dreams - maybe it's because they appear to be too far away, too remote, too untouchable. Or perhaps it's the perception that it could be too difficult to make happen. Perhaps it's down to fear or circumstances. Or, it could simply be down to our self belief, and doubts about having the relevant experience. Whatever the reason, there is a real danger of not, at the very least taking the initial steps into turning a dream into a reality.

Certainly in my case, I had practically wiped the possibility of making it happen from my mind. And then my youngest decided that he was going to defer his university place and have a gap year BUT he wanted to be independent and move out. Suddenly the possibility crept back into my consciousness. "It's now or never", was one of my thoughts. The other was, "do I really want to be sat here in 20 years regretting not having at least tried to make it happen".

In both our minds we had created all sorts of obstacles and barriers, so after a sole searching discussion we agreed that we had to at least take some action. The first step was to make a list our favourite places. And the next step was to make contact. At this stage some unhelpful internal dialogue started up, little voices whispering all kinds of doubts & fears and as I noticed how these started to make me feel, I managed to overcome them with positive action.

I chose to send out just one email (to test the water) to one of our favourite camps. It simply stated our passion for Africa and our desire to run a safari lodge and our belief that we had the skill set to do so. Within 20 hours we had a response - it just so happened that our email coincided with this camp looking for a new management couple. The discussions began and within 6 weeks we got confirmation that we were going to Zambia for the new season which would start at the end of February 2011.

When that email arrived in my inbox, all I could do was jump about squealing with delight! The only words that I could get out (much to Sean's annoyance), were I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, OMG! IT REALLY, REALLY IS HAPPPENING! Followed by more squeals of delight, until Sean grabbed me by the shoulders and asked me to please calm down and share with him whatever it was that had make me react this way. Words cannot describe how we felt. Even now, and we're doing it, it can sometimes feel quite unreal.

It's a very exciting new chapter of our lives, with new challenges to be faced daily and of course dealing with being so far away from our family and friends.

And the really scary thing is that we very nearly didn't do anything about it. Once we'd made the initial decision to take some action, the action became the plan and then the ACTION = DREAM = REALITY!

Using Window Light


When I'm photographing a wedding, I usually begin working with the bride hours before the ceremony starts. Most brides will be getting ready at a nearby hotel or family member's home, large enough to accommodate all the bridesmaids. Since most weddings take place during the day, there should be plenty of available light in the room to work with. Natural light will always be stronger as you get closer to the window. You'll need to evaluate light from this window or windows in different parts of the room. We know that digital photography doesn't allow for over exposing the shadows so you'll need to blend the light with a proper exposure. Window light is very directional too so your exposure will vary several stops in different parts of the same room.

One thing to keep in mind is to avoid having the window as the background, unless you are creating a silhouetted image or can use a reflector, which I'll address a bit later. If you shoot towards the window, you may get a proper exposure of the subject but the background will be completely washed out. Window light can be very soft and flattering for facial features. Many stylists actually face the bride towards the window when applying make up so your job will be easier.

Shooting with a long 2.8 lens will allow you to sit in the background and capture the day's events. The long lens will help eliminate some of the busyness of the background too. Hotels are famous for warm lamps, busy patterns and artwork. Zoom in a bit tighter on your subject and the soft light coating them. Don't be afraid to use a monopod, that way you can get the slowest shutter speed needed and stay mobile while your subjects are moving around the room.

When the bride is dressed and ready, window light will help you create a nicely lit portrait.

A reflector or bounce card is a good thing to carry for just such an occasion. While you can use these for gathering the candid moments, it defeats the purpose since you will be shining light on your subject and possibly distracting them. Try having your bride stand near the window and gage the light and composition. If the light is too harsh back up, metering only the dress and skin tones. Direct sunlight will be difficult to work with since it creates heavy shadows on the face and will cause the subject to squint. Avoid direct sunlight by closing the window shears that will diffuse the light and make it more even.

To avoid having a harsh shadow/highlight situation, use the reflector or bounce card to fill in the shadows. You can also use it as a kicker light by positioning it behind the subject. Harsh shadows and highlights can make some images look interesting but you'll want nicely lit and balance portraits too. Also keep in mind that as the day goes on, the light gets weaker. It may not be shining through the same window by the time your subject is dressed and ready. It would be nice to have as much time as you need but that's usually not the case. A good wedding photojournalist will scope out other rooms and window lighting and plan ahead. Once you find the right combination of window light, reflector and background, get to work. And don't forget to bracket!

Cheap Wedding Invitations - Do-It-Yourself


Looking for cheap wedding invitations? One of the easiest, most enjoyable, most personal and yet often overlooked sources of cheap wedding invitations is to make them yourself.

There's never been a better time to make your own wedding invitations. A little creativity, a little time, and you can create a wedding invitation that your friends and family will cherish for years to come. Depending on what you include and how much you do yourself, it's even possible to create your invitations for as little as fifteen to thirty cents a piece.

Before you get started, though, keep in mind that you'll want your invitations to reflect the theme of your wedding. For a more casual wedding, invitations should be casual, a little more creative and personal. Graphics are fine in this instance. Calligraphy is often used in place of formal typesetting. Personal touches, such as paper flowers or poems or photographs can be included. If you're wedding is a theme wedding, say perhaps a Victorian theme, then your invitations might include a sheet of lace or elaborate calligraphy or a photograph from the era.

This really is your opportunity to be creative. Cheap wedding invitations do not need to appear cheap, nor do they need to restrict the vision you have for your wedding.

Okay, let's begin with how you can create a formal wedding invitation, doing it yourself and saving dramatically over the cost of sending the job out to a professional printing company. First, you have to decide what you want included. There's the invitation, of course. It's sent in an envelope, which traditionally encloses a second envelope to protect the invitation, though this is no longer considered a necessity. There's the RSVP card, which generally includes its own return envelope. There's a reception card if the reception will be at a different location than the wedding ceremony. And finally, there's a card with directions detailing how to get to the wedding.

Of course, not all of these options are necessary for each and every formal or traditional wedding. You'll have to decide which ones are right for your particular needs and which ones you can comfortably live without.

Now, in creating cheap wedding invitations for a formal wedding, you don't want to be too artsy-craftsy, and you don't want to find yourself facing a huge printing bill. Fortunately, there's an alternative that can give your invitations a very elegant, appropriate appearance while costing very little ... wedding invitation kits.

These come in a wide variety of choices, from beautiful printable invitation sheets ($3.95 for 50) to blank, rich and luxurious card stock ($8.00 for 50). You can find everything from complete seal and send invitations to cotton handmade papers. All you do is complete the design on your computer and run the invitations through your home printer or take them to Kinkos.

These kits can easily be found online simply by doing a search for "wedding invitation kit." You can also find them locally, often at your office supply store or at general retail stores such as Target. To spruce them up even more, pick up tissue paper sheets from your local arts and crafts store, cut up the sheets and include them as blotter paper in your invitations. You may even be able to have them embossed through a service such as Kinkos, though this will add significantly to the overall cost.

For the less formal wedding invitation ... just about anything goes. For instance, a handcrafted card on heavy, cream-colored paper with a sheet of tissue paper is more than sufficient. If you'd like to make it even more personal and unique, you might add a photograph, or have a friend who is skilled at calligraphy write out each card individually. Paper flowers can be a nice touch. Poems, too. Or your own artful design.

Your local craft store should have a variety of wax seals, embossed seals, fine vellum papers, multi-colored ribbons, and other items you can use to make each invitation even more unique and personal. The key is that you're investing your time in place of the often out-of-reach expense of ordered wedding invitations. The end result, however, can be invitations that are truly yours, that friends and family will cherish for years to come.

Cheap wedding invitations don't have to be poorly made, embarrassing representations. In fact, more so than ever before, with a little creativity and smart shopping you can save a small fortune and still have the wedding invitations of your dreams.

Can You Buy a Star From NASA?


There is a lot of misunderstanding about whether or not you can buy a star from NASA. NASA is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a government organization that was founded in 1958. NASA is responsible for many great achievements, including multiple manned and unmanned missions to explore the moon, the launch and use of space stations, and the space shuttle program.

In its research and observation capacities, NASA is also responsible for discovering many stars, black holes, and celestial objects. Although astronomers all over the world contribute to the collective discovery of new planets and stars, NASA doesn't actually allow you to name your own star. You also can't buy a star through them or adopt a star through them, although some planetariums and observatories hold fundraising events which allow you to "adopt a star" through them. This is usually a way for them to receive financial support for their respective museums, and it can be a nice way to interest children in learning more about space and the stars by supporting a local planetarium.

When people are looking to buy a star through NASA, they are really searching for one of several private star registry services that allow people to adopt a star. But these private star registries aren't associated with NASA, so when you buy a star through them, this is a basically an "unofficial" adoption of that star.

If you buy a star from a star registry (which again, isn't NASA) you can be purchasing a nice gift for someone, even though that person will never actually "own" that star. Star registries usually provide a pretty star chart and certificate with information about one star in the skies, and this can be a great way to enhance a child's interest in studying space and stars. Many children already have telescopes and they enjoy looking at the moon, planets, and stars at night, and it can be a fun family activity to get the kids even more interested in looking for their particular star in the sky.

Some people also choose to adopt a star as a memorial for someone they have lost. If you have a beloved parent, sibling, or spouse who has passed on, naming a star in their honor can be a nice way to pay tribute to their memory and the positive impact that they have had on your life.

When it comes to romantic holidays like Valentine's Day, wedding anniversaries, or engagements, buying a star can make a thoughtful gift for a soulmate. When it comes to the magic of wooing, it's nice to come up with gifts that aren't so material but have more of a spiritual component to them. The sentiment of naming a star after someone can be very powerful and moving for the recipient. It can be a heart-based gift that is very different from purchasing jewelry or perfume, which have a different kind of appeal.

So while you can't actually buy a star from NASA, if you are interested in adopting a star in someone's honor, you can do so through a private star registry. Just don't expect NASA's astronauts to drop you off for a visit there the next time they are passing through that part of the galaxy.

We Were Made For Companionship and Marriage


We can always bank on learning a thing or two from being at a wedding. They're events that inevitably turn up a stack of love, laughter and lasting memories. And we get such a window into other's lives--and this is a real life treat.

A wedding of true Christian believers--a true Christian wedding--is generally not too dissimilar to that of a typical church meeting, adding of course, maritally-related readings, vows, and a message styled to marriage to get the wedded couple on their way, and serve as a reminder to other members of the 'married' club who might be listening.

One point made during the message at a recent wedding I had the fortune of attending was particularly salient.

Looking at the process of divine Creation in Genesis 1 and 2, we find the ongoing refrain after each day, 'God saw [what he'd created and] that it was good,' culminating on the sixth day with, "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good." (Genesis 1:31 NIV)

God was clearly very content with his first 144 hours of creation, so he rested for the next twenty-four hours, carrying forth an important biblical principle: rest. Everything so far was 'good,' even 'very good.' He could afford to rest. It was appropriate to rest.

When we continue on into Genesis 2 we realise quite starkly the contrast in Creation stories (between Genesis chapters one and two), but the main point here is we find the first thing that's "not good." In verse 18 something concerns God. God says, "It is not good for the man to be alone." (TNIV)

Using some gender inclusive licence we could say that it's generally not good for women or men to be alone. And this is why we have marriage.

I believe there are many singles out there (particularly Christian singles) that have experienced shame for seeking a mate, a life companion. When I was single I sure did from time to time.

It is not good for people to remain single if they innately desire the companionship of a life partner, or in God's terms "a helper suitable for him" (v. 18) or her. Some can't help it, however. No matter how much they try they cannot find that partner.

Qoheleth says in Ecclesiastes 4:7-12, "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If they fall down, they can help each other up. But pity those who fall and have no one to help them up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." (TNIV) This has eternal relevance; it wasn't just relevant in the Teacher's day.

Having a well-selected life companion is generally a great blessing. If we feel the need for this companionship we should take steps to seek to fill the void, but we need to do that in appropriate ways. Married life, for any of its woes of compromise and grace, is better than the single life for the majority of people.

The History of Photography: A Snapshot


Photography has been around for centuries and it is now one of Britain's best loved pastimes, enabling people to capture a special moment in a single snapshot. How has photography progressed through the years? Let's take a look at some of the key moments in photographic history...

The Defining Moments in Photography
The term 'photography' was first coined by Sir John Herschel who used the term way back in 1830 when the photographic process became public. However, images were being captured much earlier than this.

The first type of photography was seen in ancient times where camera obscuras were used to form images on walls in darkened rooms. A camera obscura is the first image-capturing invention which led to photography as we know it today.

Throughout the 16th and 17th Centuries, the brightness and clarity of camera obscuras improved greatly by enlarging of the hole and through the insertion of a telescope lens. These became frequently used by artists and were made more portable in the form of sedan chairs.

One of the major breakthroughs in the progression of photography was made by Professor J. Schulze who learnt that by combining chalk with nitric acid and silver in a flask, he could see a darkening effect on the side of the flask that was exposed to sunlight. This was essentially an accident, but Schulze effectively created the first photosensitive compound.

Perhaps the most defining moment in photography occurred in 1816 when Nicephore joined the camera obscura with photosensitive paper. From this, he was able to form a permanent image - the first time this had ever been possible in history. Through the years since Nicephore, photography has advanced to incredible levels of detail.

In our current political climates more and more women are critical resources in the work place. Time to make the wedding phone calls and write the emails are at a premium. Hence the stress builds and the joy of planning a wedding suddenly loses its lustre.

In the combat against spam, governments have introduced laws to prevent the proliferation of electronic choking of email inboxes. Strangely is has opened up some new markets, including the wedding providers market. Companies using email marketing are using an opt in form of advertising where consumers sign up for newsletters. Real estate companies use email alerts to great effect to alert prospective buyers of new property listings. In the same way, wedding providers are being sent email alerts of upcoming weddings from couples planning their own wedding. Kiss the Bride is different from a wedding directory where couples laboriously search through a "yellow pages" style on line index. Effectively, responsibility to secure bookings is placed back on the wedding provider to provide competitive quotes for couples.

Luckily for the men, planning a wedding doesn't need to be complicated and stressful. The blissful blind ignorance of a wedding proposal can now be limited with opt in email alert companies such as Kiss the Bride to save time and the stress of planning a wedding. For wedding providers, it's a new market. By law, many of them provide a privacy policy and an unsubscribe facility to terminate a subscription ending the annoying plethora of follow up emails.

The future of the wedding market will be interesting. With further companies such as Kiss the Bride emerging, wedding providers will need to be more and more transparent with their pricing since couples will have several offers on the table to choose from. This will inevitably squeeze the market and present wedding consumers more leverage with their cash.

Things Not to Do on Your Wedding Invitations


There are a number of practices, even common practices, that are breaches of etiquette for wedding invitations. In this article, I will discuss those mistakes as well as practical alternatives for communicating information that you might want all of your guests to know, but that it is inappropriate to put with a wedding invitation.

Don't Mention Gifts: Invitations to an event should never mention gifts, as the purpose of an invitation is to invite people to an event. As a result, mentioning gifts instrumentalizes what should be a polite communication of a desire for the other person's presence (events whose purpose is gifts, such as a wedding shower, are an exception to this rule). Therefore, you should never provide registry information or even the phrase "no gifts" on your invitation. Instead, inform your parents or anyone else who is your family "maven" (source of information - for us, it's my grandmother). When people ask (and they will ask), you or your maven can politely let people know.

Don't Disinvite: By this, I am referring to the common practice of saying, "no children," on the wedding invitation, but this is not the only case. If you have a religious service that only allows member of that faith to attend, don't say that on your reception information. Instead, this information should be communicated positively by mentioning who exactly is invited in a household by name. People not invited to the wedding but invited to the reception should receive a reception invitation that doesn't mention the service.

Don't Mention Food (unless you have to): Don't provide details of the kind of food and drinks that you will be providing to your guests. Details of food and drink confuse the purpose of the event, which is to celebrate your wedding. Such details are appropriate to inviting someone to a dinner party, but invitations need to set the tone for what is important to the event. The exception to this is if the caterers need to know the preferences of the guests in advance. In this case, mention it on your reply card, but not the invitation.

Personal Finance - Time to Analyze Your Finances


Time to analyze your finances? Start with your net worth, or where you stand financially. To do this, create two columns with your assets on one side and your liabilities on the other.

Assets

Assets consist of anything with economic value, especially that which could be converted to cash such as real estate (the total value of your home), the balances in your savings and money market accounts, the value of all investments combined (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.), 401(k) and IRA accounts, and any ownership interest in a business, if applicable.

Liabilities

Liabilities are debts, such as your outstanding mortgage payment, the total due on all credit cards and loans (car loans, school loans, etc.), the total amount due for property settlements, utility payments, and any amount owed for alimony or child support.

Net Worth

Once your columns are created, the next step is to subtract your liabilities from your assets. If the end result is a negative number, take action and implement a budget to pay off all non-mortgage debt. Consider paying for items in cash instead of using a credit card, try to set some money aside each month in a savings account and establish an emergency fund.

Investing
