Inner and Outer Envelopes For Wedding Invitations

It is traditional when putting together wedding invitations to use both an inner and an outer envelope. In this article, I will discuss the different procedures with each envelope.

The outer envelope of a wedding invitation is the one that will actually take a stamp and be sent in the mail. It will therefore have the full mailing address of the person to whom it is being address. Note that, except for couples, separate adults should each receive their own wedding invitation and their own outer envelope. For instance, if you are addressing it to two sisters living together, each should get her own envelope.

On the front envelope, you should put the names of all people you intend to invite except minor children. Minor children are not listed on the outer envelope at all (don't worry; you'll get to them on the inner envelope). The name on the front envelope should be the person's formal title, not simply the first name. For example, the title should be addressed to "Mr. John Smith", not simply "John Smith".

The inner envelope is the more personalized envelope, and is addressed to the person as you refer to him or her, not the title. So, for instance, if you can say "John" or even "Dad." It is also where you clarify who exactly is invited. So, if you are inviting children, you should say each of their names on the inner envelope. In addition, it is the spot to let someone know that he or she may bring a date. In order to do this, write the term "and guest" on the inner envelope to let the person know they may bring one.
