Here's Some Great Advice for the Maid of Honor!

If you have recently been invited to serve as maid of honor at a wedding, congratulations! Being the maid of honor is truly special -- this is a role that you will never forget as long as you live! Here are some of the things you will need to consider as you perform your duties as maid of honor:

Pre-wedding planning & activities

As the maid of honor, you will be the bride's closest confidant. The bride will be expecting your assistance in making many important decisions pertaining to the wedding. She will also expect you to attend as many prenuptial events as possible. You might help her select wedding invitations, bridal shower invitations, and maybe even help her in addressing them and sending those out.

The bride will ask you to help her choose the bridesmaids' dresses and accessories. You might coordinate a shopping day with the bride and bridesmaids, in order to have everyone in agreement on what they will wear on the big day.

Afterwards, you will want to make sure all the necessary purchases have been completed, fittings done, and plan hair styling and make-up sessions right before the wedding.

One of the main functions as maid of honor is to plan and co-host the bridal shower. Send out the invitations, keep a log of respondents. Scope out locations, make reservations, order a cake. Plan the entertainment, games, and list of gift suggestions if there is no bridal gift registry. Coordinate and purchase the wedding gift from the bridal party.

Another activity is to help address the place cards for the wedding reception. And one of the most important things of all is to prepare a speech or toast for the reception too. Please check out my website for the best wedding quotes and sayings you can add to your speech.

The day before the wedding, you will attend the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner.

On the day of the wedding

As the maid of honor, you might help the bride prepare for the wedding by helping her get dressed. Plan enough time so you won't feel rushed. Make sure the bride has had something to eat before the ceremony so she does not feel faint. Help the bride with her make-up. Keep in frequent touch with the bridesmaids and other attendants to make sure everyone is adhering to the schedule.

Right before the start of the ceremony, arrange the bride's veil and train for the processional. During the ceremony, you will hold the bride's bouquet. At the end of the ceremony, you might want to adjust the bride's gown and train again for the recessional -- make sure she looks picture perfect!

At the reception, you will stand in the receiving line to graciously welcome the guests. Usually after the best man's toast, you will give a short speech followed by your own toast to the bride and groom. This is the moment in which all eyes will be on you! So make sure that all your hard work culminates in a perfectly constructed and rehearsed speech, which you will deliver with great poise.
