We are talking here about keeping down the cost of the wedding and not the cost of the wedding insurance, although with the right information both should be achieved.
With the average cost of a wedding hitting the 瞿20000 mark in 2010 and with the new austerity measures being instigated by everyone from the government down to the individual, we thought it would be a good idea to look at how to make some cost cutting measures to our wedding plans without making it to austere.
One of the first things that you need to do is establish a budget and stick to it. Constantly adding items to the list is the sure way to finish up with an extravaganza that you can not afford.
This may sound old fashioned, but it is a good idea to open a joint savings account and decide upon a monthly amount you want to pay into it. If you prefer you can open a cash-ISA and we would suggest that you have a look at the WHICH best buys for that.
Whenever you make any payments for items or services, use your credit or debit card. These items will usually need to be for more than 瞿100 to qualify for the protection that debit and credit card companies, VISA and MASTERCARD offer under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. This will ensure that if your purchases or services fail you have the possibility of a claim under their various headings depending upon which card type you used. Remember that there is also a facility called 'chargeback' that is available when using these types of card whereby the card company will try to retract the payment from the retailer, however you should check this out with your card company first.
Unless there is a particular reason not to, why don't you try and get married on a weekday. Statistical data has shown that considerable savings can be made simply by having your wedding on a day other than a weekend.
As we have mentioned in earlier articles, you may find that you have some cover for your wedding items if you have household contents insurance. You will need to check your policy or better still, contact your insurance company or insurance broker and ask them what cover you will have. Some companies have a special cover that operates during the month before and the month after the wedding, but it only covers things like the wedding presents for loss or accidental damage.
With the current economic climate it will serve you well to try and negotiate with suppliers on the price of their services. With business likely to be a bit on the slow side, they may be able tot make some reductions in their costs if you are prepared to commit to their services.
We may have ridiculed Aunty Margaret and Aunty Dot in an earlier article, but it really would cut down costs if you cane get reliable friends and relatives to chip in and help with things like the cake for example.
One final suggestion is that you have a buffet instead of a traditional sit-down meal at your reception. More and more people are opting for this as it gives more choice to guests and reduces the cost of waiters and waitresses.
