Whether you have a green thumb or not, it does not matter. If you buy a bamboo plant it will be one of the easiest things you have ever taken care of in your life. As long as you treat it right and keep it alive you can benefit from the calming beauty of the plant for years.
After you make your bamboo plant purchase, take it home and pick a place for it to live. A place that gets some indirect sunlight is the best thing for your new plant. Find a place that is not a window sill. Windows let in too much light and sunlight through the glass can get very hot and kill your bamboo. Cold drafts coming through the window will also kill it, so find a place that gets a little sunlight everyday and doesn't get too hot or cold.
Room temperature is best for your new plant. I recently bought one and did not know that you were not supposed to put it in the window and it died because it got too hot. Not only did the sunlight get it there was a heat register right under the window, too. The poor thing didn't have a chance. The newest one is doing much better. It may even stay alive for more than three weeks this time. My first lucky bamboo wasn't so much but now that I know better the next one will be. Bamboo plants need a lot of water so give them a good soaking every other day or so. there is no such thing as too much water for your lucky bamboo. The water you give your lucky bamboo should be good enough for you to drink. If you would not put it in your mouth then do not give it to your bamboo.
If you have well water in your home then your bamboo will thrive. Well water does not have all the additives that city water has. If you do have city water then keep an old milk jug full of water to use for watering your lucky bamboo some where close by. This will accomplish two things: first, it will make watering a whole lot more convenient and the additives in the water will settle out or evaporate away. Second, If you do not use up the water in a jug every few days then make sure it gets changed for fresh at least once a week.
Like every other living thing, your new plant will grow and eventually will need to be transplanted to a bigger pot. Even bamboo can get root bound. If you begin to notice that your bamboo is not growing a fast as it has been or notice that it is looking a little sickly, it may be time to transplant. Do not make a big production of transplanting. Do not try to separate the roots structure at all this will only traumatize the plant and it may not recover.
Just get a bigger pot, put some new potting soil in it, remove the bamboo plant from the smaller pot and place it in the new pot. Fill in the potting soil around the plant and water it very well. Do not even touch the roots during the transplant phase, this could also be traumatic for the plant. The new bigger pot will definitely give your lucky bamboo room to grow for a long time to come.
