The bridal shower is traditionally a party at which the bride receives gifts that will help her prepare for married life. Though a shower can be simple with just friends and family gathering together, the best wedding showers have themes that create a fun environment that is also much easier to decorate for. Traditional showers may center on certain household or seasonal items the bride will need, such as winter blankets or the famous kitchen mixer. However, today's brides typically have the basics and have created a registry of other items needed. That fact gives you a lot more room to be creative in your decorating. If you are unsure where to get started with a theme and decor for your bridal shower, here are a few ideas to help get your party planning in motion:
Tea Party
An afternoon tea party is always a popular theme for wedding showers. This is because it is elegant, but can still be modernized to have a fun and younger twist to it. Tea party wedding showers can be hosted in a Mad Hatter theme or in a more Victorian way. For a mad hatter theme, use checkered table cloths, mismatched teapots and cups, and tables decorated with funky flowers and bright colors. For a Victorian tea party, decorate tables with lace tablecloths, use elegant tea sets, and serve treats such as petit fours or crisp butter cookies. Have a variety of different teas on hand, but do not be afraid to serve other refreshments such as lemonade or coffee for the guests that do not want to drink tea.
80's Retro Party
The 80's were a wild time to live in and even more fun to use as a theme for a wedding shower. Create an 80s retro party theme using bright colors, such as neon pink, orange or green as decorations. Have guests wear 80's style clothing and make sure you have 80's music playing in the background. If you are able to, hire a DJ that specializes in 80's music. That way, the wedding shower guests can dance all day or night and have a little fun.
Celebrity Bridal Showers
Celebrity bridal showers are quickly becoming popular. This Hollywood style theme has guests dress up like their favorite celebrity - male or female. Guests will have to guess who the celebrity is, based on not only their outfit, but perhaps lines from movies, songs or interviews that make that celebrity famous. Decorate the bridal shower with spools of film and play old movies in the background. Serve a light cocktail hour with famous cocktails and snacks that the celebrities have coined as their own. This is a theme that is not only fun, but utilizes costumes and games into the same room. Imagine the bride's grandmother showing up in an Audrey Hepburn outfit while you come as Lady Gaga!
Luau Party
Luaus are fun, festive and very colorful. The bride does not have to be Hawaiian or even live near anything tropical to have a luau party. This is a great wedding shower themes simply because it brings the tropics and feel of summer to you, no matter where you live. Purchase fake leis from a party supply store and decorate with tropical flower garlands, candles or Tiki posts. Play Hawaiian luau music in the background and require each guest wear a hula skirt, lei and flower headband at the party. Serve up fruity drinks in coconut cups and give guests tropical flavored snacks such as a mango cake, fresh fruit bowls or pineapple chicken. If you are truly brave and can afford it, you could even hire an instructor to teach everyone how to do the hula. After a few daquiris, everyone will be in the mood to dance.
